It's Time to Romanticize Your Life

“Romanticizing your life” has been a recent phrase popularized by the media in an often overly complicated way. You don’t need to pretend to be a princess or only own white, aesthetic objects to do this, though the media often makes it seem like you do. In simple terms romanticizing your life just means appreciating your day to day, even when simple and mundane. This can be hard to do, especially when you feel stuck in a constant loop of school or work and as a fellow student, I will walk you through my favorite ways to begin the romanticization and its benefits.

I know the thought of this may seem silly. It may seem like putting so much emphasis on the parts of life that we often graze over or doing miniscule actions to better your worldly view is pointless. Soon enough, these things won’t feel odd, infact, you will likely begin to not realize them at all. What you will begin to notice however, is the effects. You will begin to enjoy your life more, appreciating and having a more positive outlook on both yourself and the life you lead. Though this takes time, one thing romanticization doesn’t take a lot of is effort or skill, simply the urge to try and change.

So, let us begin on the how:

  1. Put background music to EVERYTHING

Music is one of the easiest ways to change the whole vibe of your environment. One of my favorite things to do in the morning to help get up is play super upbeat well-known songs. I walk to class listening to much calmer music, strictly listen to jazz or classical for studying, and finish my day with music that simply makes me happy. By using certain types of music in different parts of my day, I can control the feeling of my surroundings. Whether that be imagining I am the dark mysterious character in the background or just helping me enjoy the fresh air a little more, the music I listen to sets the mood for this and allows me to bump to an unbeatable back track that is my life.

 2. Find better study spots

When we are in the depths of finals or your boss is just a little more on your ass this week, getting your work done becomes a huge hassle. Sitting at your desk for hours on ends quickly makes the world feel grey and even pointless. Finding study spots helps to make you feel slightly less chained. The environment that you study in can make a large difference not only on your mood but also the quality of your work. So, try a new library or coffee shop, or maybe even try out a cafe crawl. Whatever it is, finding places you genuinely enjoy makes getting your work done a little easier and your life a little happier.

 3. Take more photos

One thing I have been hearing everywhere is “everything is content” and while most people don’t need “content” in their daily lives the same principles apply. Now, think of content as beauty or worth. Everything you do in your life in some way holds a type of meaning and slowing down long enough to take a photo or video makes it easier for us to stop and appreciate the smaller things. Walking by some flowers? Take a photo. Eating a delicious meal? Take a photo. Spending time with friends? Take a photo. This doesn’t only help to take account of all the positive things in our life but allows you to hold reminders of all the things that makes you happy on a rainy day.

 4. Be the person to “know a place”

Maybe you’re like me, living in boring ole North Caroline, USA.  Often, the place you live or grow up in can seem lame, boring, maybe even ugly but every town or city has their spots. You know what I mean, chances are you’ve heard someone say, “trust me, I know a spot”. From personal experience, these are usually the most breathtaking places and even if getting there is a little sketchy the only thing playing in your mind is wow. A great way to romanticize your environment is by finding these places yourself. It not only reassures the fact that there is beauty everywhere but also gives you a personal place to escape and remind yourself of these smaller goods when things are hard (plus you definitely earn points among your friends).

 5. Slow down and take account of the beauty around you

This final “how” goes with all of the ones mentioned above. All of these are about taking time to appreciate the beauty around you and I just wanted to give one final reminder to practice noticing and creating these smaller moments that will make your life exponentially better. A large part of this is just keeping a positive outlook and practicing mindfulness, whether that be taking a moment to meditate or investing in a gratitude journal. Romanticizing life is all about how you view yourself and your world, and ultimately it is up to you to see it.

So, my biggest advice to you is this – just start. Romanticization is not a hard task so start, view your world like you would someone else's and create small moments that will last a lifetime.
